Carlisle climbed to third in the Enterprise National League by ending 10-man Scunthorpe’s unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 win at the Attis Arena.

Defender Aaron Hayden claimed the visitors’ 20th-minute winner, volleying into the roof of the net at the back post following Archie Davies’ corner from the left.

Fifth-placed Scunthorpe, who won seven and drew four of their opening 11 fixtures, suffered a further setback five minutes before half-time when captain Andrew Boyce was sent off for a challenge on Georgie Kelly.

Carlisle’s players felt the Iron should have been reduced to nine men in first-half stoppage time but Will Evans escaped with a yellow card after appearing to catch Junior Luamba with an elbow.
