Bromley boss Andy Woodman was frustrated with a lengthy stoppage in play as they fought out a 0-0 draw away to Shrewsbury on the opening day of the League Two season.

The game was paused for almost 20 minutes in the first half after one of the assistant referees fell ill and a replacement was found in the crowd.

Neither side was able to break the deadlock and Woodman said the pause had killed the atmosphere at the ground.

Woodman said: “The linesman was not very well, and we had to break for 18 minutes for someone in the crowd to step in.

“I have to address it because I have never known anything like it. They come in the other day and give us all these rule changes and then something like that happens.

“I am not having a go at the linesman, but it just kills the whole atmosphere and momentum of the game.

“It was really difficult (to adapt to the stoppage), it was the same for Michael (Appleton, Shrewsbury manager) as well and his team, so I am not just booing for me, but it is hard.

“We had to take them in the dressing room and get them back out and get the game going again. It was really difficult.

“I thought we were good value, to be honest. If there was going to be one team to score, it was going to be us.

“Particularly in the first half, we looked really good, had high energy, created good chances and got into good areas.”

Shrewsbury boss Michael Appleton said: “It was a battle of attrition in a way, we knew what we were up against and knew it was going to be a difficult one.

“There is a reason Bromley were 24th out of 24th last season with the ball, they get the ball forward early and they make it difficult for you.

“They have some big boys in the team, they have someone who can throw it 60 yards and get them up the pitch. They look to get free-kicks and throw-ins high in your half, so loads we can do and be much better with the ball.

“Defensively, to keep a clean sheet on the opening day of the season against a side that finished in the top half of the division last year, I will take it.

“They will all get better, it’s day one and there are another 45 to go, It’s a point on the board.

“The good thing is that we are 25 to 30 per cent down in what we are capable of today, but we are able to look reasonably comfortable to keep a clean sheet.”
