Chesterfield boss Paul Cook felt “absolutely let down” by the officials after his side’s 4-1 League Two hammering at Gillingham.
The Spireites saw their perfect start to the season come crashing to an abrupt halt at Priestfield.
Skipper Armani Little scored twice from the penalty spot as Gareth Ainsworth’s hosts ran riot.
Armando Dobra pulled one back for Cook’s charges before Lenni Cirino and Marcus Wyllie both netted in the second half.
An angry Cook said: “I feel let down. I don’t want to get involved and I can’t say too much because I’ve just come out of the referee’s office.
“I just can’t get my head around some of the decisions. The least said about the referee the better.
“The first one’s just never a penalty in a lifetime of football. The game changes, the crowd’s up, the atmosphere’s up and he gives a decision I cannot physically understand.
“I don’t think the second one’s a penalty. We’ve looked back at them and they’re just two decisions which change the outcome of a football match.
“I’m getting tired of it now. I’m getting yellow cards every single game on the back of these horrendous decisions.
“I want referees to do their job. I want them to be fair for both teams. I want them to get decisions right. The big decisions in a game, you’ve got to get right.
“Managers are having the same rants, referees are getting more closed off from us. I won’t even talk to the head of referees anymore, there’s no point.
“I’ve just had to wait 30 minutes outside before he’d let me go in.
“We’ve trained. Had two or three hundred fans travel and we’ve been let down. We’ve been absolutely let down.”
Gareth Ainsworth’s Gills are yet to taste defeat in the league and sent a real statement to the rest of League Two with a convincing win over the pre-season favourites.
And Ainsworth said: “I’m full of total pride. There is a real enjoyment in how I’m seeing this squad develop.
“The depths some of those boys went to is phenomenal. There are some unsung heroes. It was a really nice performance against a really strong Chesterfield side.
“I think we were solid. It wasn’t lucky, it wasn’t anything but a quality home performance.
“At 2-1 teams capitulate. It could have happened to us against Chesterfield.
“To show the resilience and strength to come back after they’ve scored and take control of the game is pleasing.
“As a squad, the players deserve massive credit. They have run for me, this football club and those fans tonight.
“That commitment and togetherness, I really hope the fans are seeing it.
“It’s a journey. It won’t be perfect all the time, but there were plenty of magic moments out there for us.”
