Chesterfield were denied victory at Prenton Park as Connor Jennings snatched Tranmere an added-time equaliser to claim a point in a thrilling 1-1 draw in League Two.

The Spireites had appeared on course for all three points after taking an early lead in the 12th minute, when the unfortunate Omari Patrick turned James Berry’s low cross past his own goalkeeper Joe Murphy.

Dilan Markanday almost made it two soon after, weaving into the box before seeing a deflected shot drift just wide – while Murphy denied him again moments later from close range.

Tranmere offered little before half-time, though Charlie Whitaker’s free-kick was comfortably gathered by Zach Hemming and Nathan Smith’s finish was ruled out for offside.

The hosts improved after the break, with Smith heading over from close range before Chesterfield threatened again through Berry’s curling effort and Ronan Darcy’s shot, which Aaron McGowan cleared off the line.

But in stoppage time, Jennings reacted quickest inside the area to fire home from close range, salvaging a valuable point for Rovers and frustrating the visitors.
