Oldham are still searching for their first EFL win since April 2022 after being held to a 1-1 League Two draw at home to Colchester.

Since regaining their league status in June – after a three-year absence – Latics have been held in both fourth-tier fixtures against MK Dons and the U’s.

Danny Cowley’s Colchester dominated the opening half and took an eighth-minute lead through a header from centre-back Jack Tucker, his first goal for the club.

Oldham equalised in the 36th minute with their only first-half effort on target as Josh Hawkes whipped in a low cross from the left which eluded everyone as the ball crept into the far corner of the net.

Latics were far more assertive in the second period and were desperately unlucky not to find a winner.

A combination of fine goalkeeping from Matt Macey and dogged defending ensured Colchester held on for a point.

Oldham were cursing their bad luck as Hawkes, Joe Quigley and Kane Drummond all had shots cleared off the line.
