Gerhard Struber will demand a more patient build-up from Bristol City after seeing newly-promoted Charlton gain a fully merited point from a 0-0 draw at Ashton Gate.
Both sides remain unbeaten after a game high on commitment, but lacking attacking quality, fought out in front of a 24,721 crowd.
City hit the crossbar after 57 minutes through an Anis Mehmeti shot, while Charlton forced the best save of the game from Radek Vitek six minutes later to prevent George Tanner conceding an own goal under pressure from Tyreece Campbell.
It was a first Championship home fixture in charge of City for head coach Struber, who was less than satisfied by the outcome.
He said: “We are disappointed not to take all three points. The atmosphere created by our supporters was great and we wanted to reward them with a win.
“It didn’t happen because we tried to use the hammer and play too many long balls when we needed to be patient before going for them with the knife between our teeth.
“The way we played suited them. We ended up fighting for too many second balls and it created a 50-50 game. Our goalkeeper has shown what a talent he is with a top save
“I expected a tough match because they are just up from a lower division. But we have to be better in our build-up play.
“We have four points from our first two games and a place in the second round of the Carabao Cup. But I would prefer six points and we need to learn quickly.
“The atmosphere here will help us as the season progresses. Our supporters are really positive towards the players and my first experience of a packed crowd here lived up to expectations.
“We now have a week to prepare for the next game and will work on what was lacking today.”
Charlton boss Nathan Jones had to leave the ground quickly and left it to assistant Curtis Fleming to address the written press.
He said: “We knew we were in for a tough game after Bristol City’s result last weekend. In the Championship you have to work your socks off as a team when you go away from home.
“There wasn’t much in the game and it was a good test for us having just been promoted against a side who reached the play-offs last season.
“We are in the process of gauging what we can do in this league and it was a really good performance.
“The save their goalkeeper made in the second half was world class. It was probably the defining moment in the game.
“We didn’t show enough quality on the ball at times when we had opportunities. Nathan and I have spent much of our careers working in the Championship and we know how important it is to cope with crowds like today’s.
“It is a big step up from League One so it is wonderful to reflect on a game where we took a fully deserved point.
“We are still growing as a team. Four points from the first two Championship games is great, but we want more because we believe we will get stronger as the season progresses.”
