Grant McCann was more than happy to see his side on the wrong end of plenty of the match statistics as Doncaster returned to winning ways against Peterborough.

Rovers had not won in their previous 10 league matches but had been edging closer with improving performances in recent weeks.

And while they did not enjoy as much possession and threat as their visitors, a Jordan Gibson brace secured a 2-1 triumph.

“I think over the last probably five or six games we have had the lion’s share of possession,” McCann said. “We’ve had the most shots. We’ve had the biggest chances.

“Guess what? We didn’t win.

“So we’ve won today because we’ve dominated the first half and defended tremendously in the second.

“Performances recently have been good but we needed to turn all that into wins.

“The lads went out and suffocated Peterborough in the first half and never gave them the chance to play because of how well we pressed them.

“And we did well for the two goals. The first one was a tremendous ball from Luke Molyneux that if Mo Salah did it for Liverpool, they’d be speaking about it for ages on Match of the Day.

“It was a great finish from Gibbo and then another after a perfect example of the press.

“It’s pleasing to get the three points and we move on.”

Peterborough manager Luke Williams felt the story would have been different for his side had they started the game in the manner they finished it.

Williams labelled Posh “unconvincing” during the first half but was pleased with the second-half performance, which saw substitute Harry Leonard halve the deficit.

He said: “In the first half, we were off the pace of the game on and off the ball. The other team were sharper than us and that was really disappointing.

“We looked second best in the duels and unconvincing on the ball and never got into our stride. We didn’t want to take the ball and needed to assert ourselves more.

“Sometimes you need to take a hit too and we looked a bit shy in that respect. The first and second contacts were not good enough and we conceded two soft goals.

“The second half was a lot better and we raised the bar in terms of energy, which has to be the bare minimum. But we had given ourselves a mountain to climb and even though we scored early in the second half, we’d just left ourselves with too much to do.

“We flooded their box but the opposition were motivated to hang on to the lead and we did not start the game in the same way that we finished it.”
