Newly-appointed Port Vale manager Jon Brady is hopeful his side can “build some momentum” after his first game in charge saw them book their place in the FA Cup fourth round with a 1-0 win over Fleetwood.

Jordan Shipley scored the decisive goal in first-half stoppage time to ensure the bottom side in Sky Bet League One progressed at the expense of the team sat in 13th in League Two.

It secured a perfect start for Brady, who has been given the difficult task of attempting to help the Valiants avoid relegation following his appointment earlier this week.

“I wanted to help this club get through to the next round – that was the most important thing,” he said.

“But this week’s been all about everyone pulling together.

“Steve (Alston) the groundsman – the work he’s done to get this game on for the football club, the work he’s done to get us on the grass yesterday.

“The welcome I’ve got from this football club this week from all the staff [has been great].

“We’re all in this together and they’ve been absolutely brilliant. So, this is just the start and hopefully we can build some momentum with this.”

Fleetwood boss Pete Wild felt his team’s performance was worthy of at least taking the game to extra-time.

“I think we’ve been far and away well in the football match,” he said.

“I think we’ve pinned Port Vale into their own half for long periods of the second half.

“And we were certainly value for at least extra-time, I think that’s for sure.

“But we’re just the nearly men at the moment.

“And what happens across a whole season is that every team goes through this little bit where things are not dropping for you, things are not hitting the back of the net.”
