Josh Benson’s superb late free-kick gave Rotherham their first away win of the Sky Bet League One season as they came from a goal down to beat Northampton 2-1 at Sixfields.

Sam Hoskins’ first half penalty, his 100th Northampton goal, put the home side in front but the visitors turned it around with Joe Rafferty levelling before Benson snatched victory.

Hoskins was deemed marginally offside when he headed in Terry Taylor’s cross in the eighth minute, but Rotherham had made the better start as Shaun McWilliams glanced wide and Martin Sherif miscued when well placed.

Northampton took the lead when Zak Jules brought down Kamarai Swyer in the box and Hoskins made no mistake from the spot in the 26th minute.

Sherif skewed another shot wide at the start of the second half but Rotherham continued to push and they were deservedly level with 19 minutes to play when Rafferty converted at the back post after Joe Hugill’s knockdown.

The visitors remained in the ascendency and they completed the turnaround with just two minutes remaining thanks to Benson’s terrific free-kick.
