Kamarl Grant’s first goal for Millwall proved decisive as his side defeated Sky Bet Championship rivals Coventry 2-1 in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

After winning all three of their away games so far, this was the Lions’ first win of the season at The Den, although they had to withstand some heavy late pressure from the Sky Blues.

Millwall broke through in the 33rd minute when Aidomo Emakhu’s corner came off Coventry midfielder Kai Andrews for Massimo Luongo to squeeze the ball in at the near post.

Coventry came close to equalising nine minutes into the second half when Miguel Brau’s cross picked out Kaine Kesler-Hayden and his header was well saved by Millwall goalkeeper Max Crocombe.

The Lions doubled their lead in the 76th minute when Grant climbed highest from another Emakhu corner to bury his header.

The Sky Blues pressed for a way back into the game but found Crocombe in the way again as he pushed out Victor Torp’s 25-yard strike before denying Haji Wright just a minute later.

They had some late hope through Wright’s 89th-minute penalty after the American had been fouled in the area by Wes Harding, but Millwall held on for a place in round three.
