Dave Challinor was full of praise for striker Kyle Wootton after his brace earned Stockport a 2-1 win over Plymouth.
Caleb Watts put Tom Cleverley’s side ahead after 42 minutes as they looked to extend their unbeaten run to seven games.
But Wootton struck twice in the second half, with his 85th-minute winner securing fourth-placed County a fourth win in five games.
Wootton’s double took his tally for the season to 15 goals in League One and Challinor raved about his star striker’s contribution.
He said: “Wootton is in a great place in terms of being joint top of the goalscoring chart in the division, which is brilliant.
“The two bits of quality in the second half gave him two opportunities and he took both of them.
“We knew that Plymouth would be aggressive out of possession and press against us. We thought we could make some one-on-one opportunities out wide, but they defended our attacking play well.
“They asked us questions that in the first half we didn’t have the answers to.
“Thanks to the second-half changes we made, we got more territory, we dealt with moments better and we spent more time in their half of the pitch.
“We asked more questions and found those bits of quality and produced those opportunities and chances.
“Today, we had to grind it out and credit goes to the players for doing that.”
Plymouth boss Cleverley felt his side were unfortunate not to have come away with at least a point after dominating the first half.
He said: “We were outstanding in the first half and when you come to teams with as much quality as this – and I don’t mean quality in the first 11, I mean all the way through the 18 – you’re going to sustain some pressure.
“Unfortunately, we broke twice under that pressure, but we hit the woodwork twice ourselves.
“We created enough chances to win, and that’s the criticism you can aim at us. We’ve not been ruthless enough in those periods of domination and we need to work on that. But I’m proud of the players today.
“Every time we go over the white line, we want to put a performance in that our supporters are proud of. That usually starts with hard work, with competing, with having purpose behind every attack and trying to get people on the edge of their seats.
“We’ve done that of late and we did it again in the first half today. But they have some really good players in their ranks and have the ability to dominate as well.
“It was a game of two halves. Unfortunately, they took more advantage of their period of domination than we did.”
