Huddersfield boss Lee Grant felt a step up in intensity after the break was crucial to his side’s 2-0 League One victory over Doncaster.

The Terriers laboured through the first half but grew into the game in the second half, with substitutes Ben Wiles and Joe Taylor scoring late goals.

Grant said: “Second half the group were clearer as to where we might have success and pitch geography and did a much better job of using their spaces. We handled the ball a lot better.

“But the main thing was the intensity went up a notch and the willingness to go and take an extra step and make blocks was so pleasing second half.

“As much as we’re delighted the team are interacting the way they are, we have to be mindful we are only nine weeks in as a new group and we’ve got lots of learning to do.

“There’s things I need to make clearer for them and it takes until half-time for me to be able to show them and then they go ‘ah!’ and go out and execute it.

“We need to learn some of those lessons and take it on the chin and hopefully when this happens again they are in a better position to understand it and make the right decisions.

“But it’s lovely that we’re able to get results and get performances when we’re still getting to know one another.”

Grant McCann was left to rue that his side did not make the most of their first-half dominance and questioned the decision to award a penalty – for a foul on Taylor – for the second goal.

The Rovers boss said: “I thought we were outstanding. First half we should be out of sight, we probably should be 4-0 up, we weren’t. You need to score when you’re on top and we didn’t.

“Huddersfield had no answer to our press, there was no way out for them. We kept pinching it, taking it off them, creating opportunities, their keeper’s made a couple of saves for them.

“I wasn’t really concerned at half-time because I know we’ve got a good team who can keep going and going and going. The only thing that’s disappointing is the first goal.

“All night the distances in the back four were excellent, but nobody got across and we left the gap for Wiles, who’s a Championship player, bang, bottom corner.

“They seem to have spent £10-15million the past year or two and that’s the type of players they have.

“The second one…I’ll go in and see the referee because it’s absolutely ridiculous. I think he said it was a trip – there’s no trip. I know Joe and he’s really good at that, he’s bought one for his team.”
