Under-pressure Huddersfield manager Lee Grant believes the club’s fans are right to demand more after their poor run of form continued with a 1-1 draw at home to Wigan.
Having been expected to challenge for promotion, the Terriers have taken just 13 points from their last 13 league games – and the home crowd made it clear that they want Grant gone towards the end of the game.
He said: “There’s always a sense of relief when it’s not aimed at the players first and foremost, but then there’s disappointment, because I know that it affects the players and the feeling of the group.
“But first and foremost, we have to take ownership of the fact that the supporters are disappointed with what they’re seeing right now.
“They have more right than most to be frustrated as there’s a group they feel can go and do something special this year, and it’s falling short of our expectations.
“We have to expect that they’re going to let us know that we have to do better, and I have to. It’s clear they’ve had enough.
“We look like we’re a good team. We’ve got more football than the opposition. We can win this game. Yet we don’t.
“So of course, prior to my time, they’ve had enough disappointment and frustration that they don’t need to show patience with this group or with me. They don’t want to. They want what they want now.
“And look, why can’t they demand it? They should. That’s my belief. Because we’ve got to put demands on the players as well to really step up to the challenge.”
Wigan boss Ryan Lowe said: “It’s mixed emotions. It was disappointing with the goal – we’ve been good at defending set-pieces, solid and resolute, but their lad just gets across and heads it in.
“But then we change one or two things at half-time.
“I thought the 10s were working well but we just felt we could get at them a bit more, which we did, and we scored a fantastic goal. Then lo and behold, Raphael (Borges Rodrigues) comes inside one and potentially nearly wins it for us when he hits the bar.
“If that goes in it’s a fantastic three points, but this is still a fantastic point against a good club and good team.
“You know, Huddersfield haven’t got going as yet, but you can see the quality they’ve got, and I don’t think they really hurt us.
“We were well prepared behind the ball, well set up, so I’m excited for the boys because they were excellent and that was the least they deserved for their efforts.”
