Michael Skubala was left “devastated” as Tom Hamer’s stoppage-time own goal snatched three points from Lincoln’s grasp as they were held to a 1-1 League One draw at Bolton.
The Imps defended heroically for nearly 97 minutes after Freddie Draper headed them into a 19-second lead.
But with a third-successive league win beckoning, Hamer slid the ball into his own net as he attempted to keep out Amario Cozier-Duberry’s shot.
“We are devastated because it was a brilliant performance,” said manager Skubala. “We are frustrated because everyone thought we had done enough.
“We defended the box like warriors again. When you get that far with a great performance, you want to get three points.
“We knew they would have lots of ball. They are a top team and will be up there.
“There was just one moment at the end where we made the pitch too big and we could have managed that last moment a bit better.”
Lincoln were handed a potential lifeline when Wanderers goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe inexplicably back-heeled the ball out for a corner in the final minute.
But the visitors could not retain possession and Bolton broke quickly and were rewarded for their second-half dominance when Hamer scored.
It was certainly hard luck for goalkeeper George Wickens, who produced a string of fine saves to protect Draper’s goal which was one of the fastest ever in League One.
“The lads are gutted because they know it was another monster performance,” added Skubala.
“In the end Bolton, who are a ball-playing team, just wanted to chuck it into the box. They had to go off method because they were desperate to nick something.”
Wanderers have now drawn their last three league games and won only once in their first five fixtures of the season.
However, boss Steven Schumacher does not think it will be long before the Trotters catch a break.
“I would like more points but if we continue playing like we are, then the points will come,” he said. “It is inevitable.
“You can’t do both sides of the game as well as we are and not get victories. Everyone has to stay patient.
“It was certainly eventful again and full credit to the players for keeping going. It showed good character and eventually they got something they deserved.”
Schumacher was less impressed with the manner of Lincoln’s lightening start, claiming there were two fouls before Draper netted his third goal of the season.
He added: “I said to the fourth official there were two clear fouls and if he was going to play like that, it will become a free for all. At times it was.
“But we are on the right track. We are playing some unbelievable stuff.”
