Head coach Mike Dodds was “proud” of his Wycombe side as they rescued a late point against Thames Valley neighbours Reading in Saturday’s 2-2 League One draw at Adams Park.

Fred Onyedinma put the Chairboys ahead inside the opening four minutes with his first goal in eight months, but two strikes from Mamadi Camara and ex-Wanderers man Lewis Wing – in the space of 60 seconds – gave the Berkshire-based team the lead just before half-time.

Wing’s goal was a 25-yard thunderbolt which was smashed in front of the travelling Reading fans.

However, with a minute left on the clock, James Tilley secured Wycombe their second point of the season with a brilliant header from a Taylor Allen cross for his first goal for the club since joining from AFC Wimbledon in June.

Speaking at full-time, Dodds said: “I’m really proud of the group.

“I am proud of the group because when the crowd were getting agitated and venting some frustration, we could have crumbled.

“It shows me that the culture internally is strong and we believe what we are doing is right.

“We will eventually get success and I am proud of the group as they stuck to what we are doing.

“Today, there was a light at the end of the tunnel for me, as we could have abandoned everything, but we did not – we kept on going.”

For Reading, it was also their second point of the season as they almost left Adams Park with their first league win of the campaign.

Manager Noel Hunt believed the draw was a “step in the right direction” as they continue to rebuild.

The Royals are now out of financial troubles following the takeover by former Wycombe owner Rob Couhig, who bought the club from Dai Yonngee.

He said: “We have been working hard on being more of a goal threat and being in there and hitting the areas.

“It’s mad because I said to Mama (Camara) earlier that I thought he would score today – I didn’t think he’d score a header from 16 yards though.

“He worked really hard for the team and tactically he’s very, very good and he takes the moment when it comes.

“Our fans were great today. I thought we played well, which game them something to cheer about, so it works hand-in-hand.

“I’m gutted for them because we conceded a late goal but it’s a step in the right direction.

“It’s another point on the board, two unbeaten and we have to keep searching and hopefully the win is around the corner.”
