Port Vale cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win at Exeter in League One to pick up their first win of the season.

After a bright start, Exeter gifted Vale a goal on four minutes when Jake Doyle-Hayes gave a sloppy pass straight to Ruari Paton and he made no mistake beating Joe Whitworth from 15 yards.

Exeter came close to an equaliser on 31 minutes when some intricate play on the edge of the box led to a chance for Doyle-Hayes, but he was denied by the legs of Joe Gauci.

Vale made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time when Devante Cole ran through before sliding the ball under Whitworth from 18 yards.

Sonny Cox missed a great chance to get Exeter back into the game at the start of the season half, while Josh Magennis was denied by Gauci.

Ilmari Niskanen was next to miss a good chance for Exeter with the Valiants happy to sit on what they had and see out the second half comfortably.
