Liverpool return to Wembley to defend their Carabao Cup crown with head coach Arne Slot seeking to win his first trophy eight months into his Anfield reign.

Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo both scored two apiece, either side of a Mohamed Salah goal on a rare early appearance in the competition as Liverpool got their defence off to a flying start. Jarell Quansah’s own goal had given the visitors the lead but the Reds’ forward power proved too much for the Hammers, who had Edson Alvarez sent off in the second half.

Another two second-half goals for Gakpo had Liverpool cruising towards the quarter-finals only for an eventful last 10 minutes to add some unnecessary jeopardy. Simon Adingra pulled one back only for Luis Diaz to restore the cushion but Tariq Lamptey’s 90th-minute deflected finish resulted in a nervy finish.

Darwin Nunez ended a six-game barren run with the opening goal with Harvey Elliott doubling the lead inside the first 32 minutes. Cameron Archer’s brilliant individual goal halved the deficit in the second half but Liverpool closed out the game.

Lucas Bergvall controversially scored the only goal which gave Spurs a narrow advantage. Liverpool were furious the 18-year-old was still on the pitch when, on a yellow card, he caught Kostas Tsimikas late on and their fury intensified when the midfielder scored while the Greece defender was off receiving treatment.

Tottenham threw away their chance of making it to Wembley with an insipid performance at Anfield where they were crushed by Slot’s side. Gakpo continued his impressive run in the competition with a first-half goal to cancel out Spurs’ lead and after the break Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk powered them back to Wembley.
