Salford returned to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Tranmere at Prenton Park to move into the League Two automatic promotion places.

Second-half goals from Jorge Grant and Kelly N’Mai secured a fourth win in five matches for the visitors, while Tranmere slumped to a fifth straight defeat.

The hosts started brightly and nearly took the lead in the seventh minute when Dylan Jones forced a smart save from Matt Young after being played through by Kristian Dennis.

Salford’s best chance of the first half fell to N’Mai in the 24th minute, but he smashed over from close range.

Ryan Graydon then headed onto the roof of the net for the visitors shortly before the break as the sides went in level at half-time.

City eventually broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when Grant rifled home from 10 yards after finding himself in space on the edge of the box.

Tranmere went in search of an equaliser, Charlie Whitaker coming close with a fierce effort which was blocked.

But N’Mai sealed the win with 15 minutes remaining, weaving through the Rovers’ defence before finishing from a tight angle.
