Saturday’s briefing: Salah decides to stay put as Postecoglou searches for leak

Mohamed Salah signed a new two-year contract with Liverpool on Friday, ending months of speculation about his future.

Ange Postecoglou is playing detective in the bid to identify a club leak, while Burnley moved top of the Championship with victory over Norwich.

Slot Salah-vating over Mo deal

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot welcomed the positive message Mohamed Salah’s new two-year contract sent out in terms of the club’s ambitions.

Salah said he signed “because I think we have a chance to win other trophies”.

The Dutch boss said: “If you want to sign new players or players who want to extend here, it is always a positive to see one of our star players over the last seven or eight years has made the choice to extend his contract.

“It also shows maybe how ambitious this club is: not only Mo, but the owners. We are really ambitious to keep performing the way this club has performed for so many years.”

Fixing a leak

Ange Postecoglou has vowed to stamp out a leak inside Tottenham.

Erroneous information about Wilson Odobert’s fitness was circulating on social media and Postecoglou has had enough.

“There is no doubt we have got a leak inside the club, somebody who continues to leak out information. They have all year. I don’t know why, it doesn’t help us. It just makes our job more difficult,” the embattled Australian said.

“We try really hard to keep things in-house, like all clubs, because we don’t want on gameday opposition being aware of any sort of team selection, but we’ve got somebody within our camp who continually gives out information.

“We’ve narrowed it down, we’ve been looking at it for quite a while and kind of have a fair idea of where it is coming from. We’ll deal with it but it’s not helpful for us.”

Twenty-nine not out for Burnley

Burnley went back to the top of the Championship after holding on to beat Norwich 2-1 at Turf Moor and extend their unbeaten league run to 29 matches.

Goals from Hannibal Mejbri and Jaidon Anthony before the break were reward for a dominant first-half display by the Clarets, who moved three points clear of overnight leaders Leeds.

Norwich were much improved in the second half and substitute Jack Stacey pulled one back, but Scott Parker’s side stood firm to also extend their unbeaten home league run this season to 21 matches.

Manchester City kick off the Premier League weekend with the 12.30pm visit of Crystal Palace.

Arsenal will look to hold off Liverpool’s title precession against Brentford in the evening kick-off while Brighton take on Leicester, Nottingham Forest host Everton and Southampton play Aston Villa in a trio of 3pm games that could have a huge bearing on European qualification.

In the Championship, Leeds and Sheffield United will look to make up ground on Burnley when they face Preston and Plymouth respectively in the 12.30pm games.

Celtic can move within one win of the Scottish Premiership title by beating Kilmarnock while Chelsea will continue their pursuit of the quadruple when they take on Liverpool in the Women’s FA Cup semi-final.
