Steve Cotterill admitted fortune favoured Cheltenham as they upset League One high-flyers Bradford 1-0 to reach the FA Cup second round.

Isaac Hutchinson headed in a Jordan Thomas free-kick after less than two minutes, though the goal sparked controversy.

Referee Robert Massey-Ellis blew his whistle just as Thomas delivered the ball, appearing to confuse Bradford’s defence.

Their manager Graham Alexander was later shown a red card for protesting after the final whistle.

“We’ve had a tough start to the season, so maybe a little bit of luck came our way today,” said Robins boss Cotterill.

“If I was Graham, I’d be disappointed with it, but it was a good free-kick and great execution.

“They’re a point off the top of League One, so it was always going to be a big ask. The lads showed huge effort, resilience, and defensive organisation.”

Bradford responded strongly after conceding, with Tyreik Wright denied by goalkeeper Joe Day’s legs before Tommy Leigh fired wide.

Andy Cook then saw a shot deflected over as the visitors pressed for an equaliser.

Day produced another fine save to keep out Wright midway through the first half, while Jake Bickerstaff went close for Cheltenham before the break.

Cook’s header was parried shortly after the restart, but Cheltenham’s defence held firm.

A succession of late blocks and clearances preserved the slender lead, continuing the Robins’ revival under Cotterill.

Bradford assistant manager Chris Lucketti voiced frustration at the decisive moment.

“Graham went to speak to the referee and the next thing I saw was a red card,” he said. “The referee blew the whistle, everyone stopped, and we expected the free-kick to be retaken.

“Instead, he gave the goal. Everyone was confused, and the referee will have to explain his decision.”
