Thursday’s briefing: Thomas Tuchel warning and Mary Earps booed at Old Trafford

England boss Thomas Tuchel vowed not to shy away from tough decisions involving three of his biggest stars.

Manchester United celebrated victory on a historic occasion that included a return to Old Trafford for Mary Earps, but Arsenal suffered Women’s Champions League disappointment.

And Rob Edwards swapped the Championship promotion race for the Premier League relegation battle.

Tuchel gets tough with England trio

Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Harry Kane have been told they cannot all play together in England’s current system.

Boss Tuchel has warned he will not dodge “tough decisions” for the World Cup.

Preparations for next summer’s tilt at glory are stepping up having secured their spot in North America with Bellingham and Foden recalled for Thursday’s Wembley qualifier against Serbia and the Sunday trip to Albania to spare.

Asked if the high-profile trio can play together, Tuchel told talkSPORT: “At the moment, if we keep the structure, they cannot play.

“They can but not in the structure, not for the balance that we developed and not for the structure that comes also with wingers who are like specialists in their positions.”

United beat Earps while Arsenal collapse

Manchester United and Arsenal had contrasting fortunes in Europe.

United celebrated the first Women’s Champions League match at Old Trafford by beating Paris St Germain 2-1 thanks to goals from Melvine Malard and Fridolina Rolfo, in a game that saw former England goalkeeper Mary Earps booed on her return to her old club.

But holders Arsenal threw away a 2-0 half-time lead to lose 3-2 to Bayern Munich.

Emily Fox and Mariona put the Gunners in a dominant position at Munich’s Allianz Arena, but Alara Sehitler, Pernille Harder and Glodis Perla Viggosdottir turned the game around.

Edwards told to “refresh” Wolves

Rob Edwards begins the tough task of keeping Wolves in the Premier League after becoming their new head coach on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The 42-year-old left Championship club Middlesbrough and agreed a contract until 2029 with Wanderers after they sacked Vitor Pereira earlier this month.

It is reported Boro will receive around £3million in compensation after Edwards only joined them in June on a three-year contract.

Edwards will be hoping he can change Wolves’ fortunes around after nine defeats from their opening 11 matches has left them sitting eight points adrift of safety.

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said: “We need to refresh the whole club with a new coach’s philosophy, bringing his own identity and ideas, and we can build on that. We are at a new chapter for the club and Rob will be a key piece of that.”

Shearer writes off Reds

Alan Shearer believes Liverpool’s Premier League title race is over and says unless they improve they will be “dumped out of whatever competitions they’re in”.

Arne Slot’s out-of-sorts defending champions slipped to their fifth league defeat of the season on Sunday at Manchester City and sit eighth in the table, eight points behind leaders Arsenal.

“I think they would have to probably win every single game between now and the end of the season. I don’t think that’s possible. So, I think their title race is done,” former England captain Shearer told Betfair.
