Plymouth manager Tom Cleverley wants his team to “replicate the fight” shown in their 1-0 away win at Wycombe for the rest of the season.
Owen Oseni’s strike in the 61st minute following a mistake from Chairboys goalkeeper Will Norris gave the Pilgrims only their sixth victory of the Sky Bet League One season.
It is their third away win on the bounce, and for Cleverley, the result and performance were the perfect tonic following the recent FA Cup clash between the two teams six weeks ago.
Wycombe won that tie 2-0 at Adams Park in a game which Plymouth looked flat and lethargic.
Cleverley said: “We knew we would be under pressure when you come to places like this and in the middle of the game, we kept them at arm’s length, as they played really well.
“We know this is a difficult place to come as they hadn’t lost here since the second game of the season, and the last time they lost in the league was at the end of September.
“We did ride our luck a bit, but we didn’t get any luck over the weekend [in the 1-0 home loss to Bradford], so we need to replicate the fight when we defend the lead.
“If we’re chasing the game, we need the same fight and belief.
“That’s three away wins now in a row and three clean sheets in five.
“We’re growing as a team and we’re not the same team that came here in the FA Cup last month. We’re different in terms of mentality and structure.”
Wycombe head coach Michael Duff admitted that there were “too many individual errors” in the loss as they have now gone four games without a win in all competitions.
This poor run is off the back of a very impressive 12-game unbeaten streak.
The result is also only the fourth time the Chairboys have lost since Duff took over nearly three months ago.
He said: “We found a way to lose the game as we were in control for the first 30-35 minutes, but we then got sucked into going backwards with our passing and throwing.
“We were keeping the ball for keeping the ball’s sake and we lost our purpose of going forward.
“That offers encouragement to the opponent and we need to take our chances when we get them.
“There are too many individual errors and two of three shirts haven’t been nailed down yet.
“We just needed to do more with the ball and if we go 1-0 up, they go under.”
